But punk and disco were two sides of the same coin. Though their origins were different, they both came from the outcast children of the 60s who had grown up into isolated adults longing for community and who, as Jon Savage puts it in The Secret Public, desired to simultaneously transcend and celebrate their alienation from the dominant mainstream culture of the time. Both genres were affirmations of personal freedom.
